Ahh yes progress is nice, but it is so sad to see some old friends go. All the hours spent were not wasted though. Here is some old art retired to make room for new. Art is a fluid process much like a river and through time the pieces of our past go downstream paving the way for the stream to build and grow. May all our progress grow deeper and provide more life to the world around us.
Here we have a few concept pieces I did over the beginning of my illustration career. Old art retired? More Like old art loved. First is a creature design that blended a bald monkey with the somewhat surreal aye-aye. Second we have a radical meeting of mantis aliens. This one gave me the opportunity to dive into some really interesting insects, learning more about our little friends. And Finally, we have a classic horse supply cart design, done as concept art for a new video game. For this one I combined a really strong Clydesdale horse with a somewhat overstuffed supply cart. I then filled the cart with all manner of medieval weaponry and supplies. Another classic themed item, that I just loved painting.
Enjoy Retiring Your Old Art
So even though we must say goodbye to old art, we still share its joys and benefit from what we learned while creating it. Always take what you can from every project you create. And even if you decide that you must retire these old works, in favor of new, share them with yourself every once in a while. No reason we cant be the ones to be motivated by looking at our work. Creatures, concepts, and full illustrations, they all teach us something we would have never gained anywhere else.
